That is not related to SourceSafe or any other source control tool are you using, but the project table itself. Try renaming a piece ot code right from the Project Manager - you'll get the same error. Unfortunatelly, I can't help you with an workaround - maybe someone will jump in.

Btw, I am using sourcesafe with vfp8 without any problems, and the projects were initially created in VFP7.
