Fatal exception error when doing a PACK

I received an error message about one of my index files, telling me to delete it and recreate it. Since I was not exactly sure how to do this, I renamed the file then restored the index from a backup and did a pack on the table. I got a fatal exception error, when the pack hit about 56000 records. I thought maybe that the table had gotton too large.
I wanted to check this out further so I tried a pack on another table and had the same problem. Now any table I try to pack, I get a fatal exception error on - and it never completes. There seems to be sufficient disk space for the table - there is 10gb free on the drive, and I believe there is sufficient memory. Any ideas what would cause this ? In the future how should I recreate an index file ?

Thanks for your help with this !
