Here is how I solved the problem:
I created transparent image (pixel100.gif) the size of 1 x 100. I then used this image as a spacer in the top cell of each column. Therefore, now each column is exactly 100 px width.
Then I created image for my hyperlink of the width = 100 px too. Therefore, the hyperlink image now extends exactly the width of the cell.
All works well now.
