Title:
New technology vs Improved technology
I have given thought lately to our need to constantly learn new technology to remain proficient in our chosen skillset. It became clear that existing technology is often abandoned because a new tool is created which surpasses the existing features of the old tool.
Such a condition exists for the Remote View technology introduced early the VFP product. If this tool had gone thru an evoloution which ebraced the enhanced connectivity as required by modern applications, we as VFP developers would not be faced with CursorAdapters, XMLAdapter et al. The existing tool would incorporate the technology and added features to make it as valuable today as it was in the beginning. This is not to say that we can no longer use this "old" technology, but as we all know it is not up to the task of dealing with present day data processing and trasportation.
I for one, would rather see an evolotion of existing tools so as to accquire necessary enhancements rather than total replacements. It is surely a fact that one tool cannot do everything, but certainly much of the new technology and enhanced functionality could have been implemented in Remove Views. A feature abundantly under-utilized.
Just my 2c worth.
