I'm assuming that it must be possible through ODBC because we have a tool similar to the MS query analyzer that uses ODBC and gets this info from databases other than MS SQL Server. It probably works with the ODBC API somehow, I'm guessing. "I'm guessing" is the operative phrase here because I have never worked with an ODBC API. Looks like I get to explore it now!
