Attempting the lock is the way to find out if it is locked...and if there *were* another way, you'd have to hope that the record didn't get locked between the check and the attempt.
Why do you need to know before you try to lock it?
>Does anyone know a way to ask the question: "Is there currently a lock on the current record in a table?" I know the rlock() function will tell me this but I want to ask the qusetion before I attempt the rlock().
