The problem is probably related to flow control. The data you are sending is overflowing the printer buffer. You need to do the flow control yourself if you send data directly to the com port. I'm not certain what the answer is yet. I'm working out the solution with a thermal label printer as well.
But for you there's another solution:
If you've already invested alot of time coding, this may not be what you'd want to hear... but you should really try the Epson OPOS control to do your receipt printing. It's so much easier.
