Business objects represent real life business entities. For example, a customer business object might have contact information, account number an so on.

I'll go a bit further than Craig did. The business object, represents both the data associated with it, and the rules pertaining to it. In terms, of rules, and referencing back to the customer business object, there might be a credit limit property associated with the customer. The rules might, for example, check to see if the customer's order exceeded their credit limit.
