Look at the source of the upsize wizard. It is very fast and naturally you can customize it in VFP. If you look carefully you'll find two methods to upload data, a faster one that the wizard uses whenever it can and a slower but more universal one.

If you want I can send you a project I did by customizing the wizard. I don't remember the details, but I'd translate my comments.
