I replaced my own statusbar by the system status bar, because I frankly like the look of it and the ability to show CAPS, OVR and NUM settings.

Also I thing that the opportunity to show ad hoc help in texboxes and other controls is a nice addendum as well.

My problem is the default value I'd like to have. It's a concatenation string of all kinds of settings like version, data directory etc. I managed to show it when no form is active, by restoring the info when the (base)form is released, but as long as a form is active, the statusbar is abysmally empty or displaying things I do not want it to display.

The situation is livable but not really satisfactory.

Do I have to make my own statusbar then, or are their tricks to access that space in ways that I do not know yet?
