Seriously though, I can see both points of view. If I'm travelling by myself just to attend a conference, then I want the best value venue possible. Good facilities and support, but outside the venue is not all that important. If, OTOH I'm dragging the family along then there better be stuff for them to do, otherwise 'm going to be spending so much time keeping them happy that I won't learn anything.

Along the lines of "going to a conference to learn", I wholeheartedly agree with that philosophy, BUT for those attendees so inclined, there is a bit of an incentive to stay in Las Vegas a few more days for a "real" vacation (something that probably hasn't been discussed with respect to Milwaukee, Kansas City, and other environs). >Yes. Agreed. I've (and many others for sure) done that. I took my wife and had a vacation before DevCon in San Diego for example. She would be interested in Vegas, cause there is something to do for spouses. I did not take her to KC.
