In a case like this, I've found most of the time the problem is corrupted data. As Craig mentioned, try re-creating the CDX files (don't just use the reindex command). If that doesn't work, it's probably corrupted data in a memo field. Determine the file having the problem, and try to use the COPY TO command to copy records to a temp file. If it bombs in the middle of that, it will be on the record that's corrupted.
