Check your 'set exact'. If it's on then it'd look for exact matches. Default behaviour is to do an incremental search ('set exact off').

PS: You don't need to click column header for searches. It does search on column where the cursor is. Clicking on column header sorts on that column (toggle ascending/descending on subsequent clicks). You might have the data sorted on column x but do a search on column y.
