I don't know for sure it applies to your situation but, i had a program with simular functionality that worked well with adobe writer 4.0.
When I had to add some functionality, i also upgraded adobe writer to 5.0.

The result was that it wasn't working anymore ( i was getting anoying windows asking me where i would like to place the file).

After some investigation i found out that i was using a Bug (undocumented feature) of adobe 4.0. And that the bug was resolved in the new version.

I solved the problem by reinstalling adobe 4.0 and removing adobe 5.0.
