If you're trying to avoid the licensing costs associated with SQL7, you might try moving down to MSDE. You can leave everything pretty much as is. Of course this will work only if your SQL *.MDF files never grow larger than 2GB and you don't have more than five concurrent connections ( for performance reasons ) with your clients and the back end.
