I find it weird coz it only had few items on it and yet the file size is too big. I modified the file by deleting the pictures, removed formats etc. When I saved it, the file is still around 1 MB. What could be the possible cause of this?

I don't know why it does it, but I've seen it happen before. If you hightlight the cells and copy them to a whole new workbook, it should save that as much smaller.
