A brief follow up...

Its considered a big no to mark other user's controls as safe for initialization and scripting (not to mention the liability issues), but its a simple matter of adding two keys to the registry (if you decide to write your own control).

Under the controls GUID entry in:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{Controls Guid Here}/Implemented Categories
two keys must be added:
{7DD95801-9882-11CF-95A9-00AA006C42C4}
Value - (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
{7DD95802-9882-11CF-95A9-00AA006C42C4} (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
Value - (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)

This will tell IE that its safe for initialization and scripting, but it's not necessarily true. Hence the liability factor. Be aware and careful.
