Each computer needs a network card.
You can connect the two computers directly with a network cable, and that's about all there is to it.
If you want to consider future growth (more computers), you are better off with a hub or switch; each computer will be connected to the hub or switch with a network cable.
Note: The wiring in the UTP cables (the standard network cables) is different for a direct connection, or for a connection to a hub.
