It should be possible to connect those, without additional upgrades. Just make sure both share some network protocol - for instance, NETBEUI, or TCP/IP.
I recommend TCP/IP, since this is the standard protocol suite used on the Internet, you will need it anyway to access the Internet, and you really need nothing more.
In this case, on your internal network, each machine should be assigned a unique IP address, for instance, 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 (IP addresses starting with 10 are in one of the ranges reserved for internal networks, so you won't have a conflict with public IP addresses).
