Cheers but it doesn't make any difference.
I've tried it with
=="3"
="3"
=='3'
='3'

Same result every time. It's always undefined when the form is submitted.
If I assign a value to the input box in the html code then that value gets submitted despite the javascript function giving an alert which indicates that it has changed the value.
