I don't know whether it will be suitable for your situation or not.
But what i do in these scenarios is following:
1) change the style of the check box to be Graphical.
2) Use a BMP in DownPicture property to show the cross (like [X])
3) Use a plan BMP in Picture property to show the plain (like [ ])

Just make sure that the size of the bmp is quite big.
