I'll be more specific about what I am trying to do.

I are looking at a (SQL7) table of government land valuations of properties.
The table rows are uniquely identified by (i) a property node (row1), (ii)a roll number (row2) and (iii)the valuation date (row3). An evaluation is done on a particular property (row1) and on a specific part of that property (row2).

I need to extract a recordset that contains records of the most recent valuations (max of row3). It seems to me that grouping is unavoidable.
