David,

Until a few weeks ago, I was using an Inspiron 9100 with Win2K. That was a sweet machine! It was stolen by a break-in to my car while, as it happens, I was attending a most interesting presentation by Whil Hentzen at the BAFUG meeting. (The same thing happened to another attendee.) But I digress. Now I'm using the machine I used before that one, a Gateway Solo Pentium 233 MHz notebook with a Windows 95B, 64MB of RAM and a 5GB drive.

I couldn't resist getting the high resolution display on the new machine (it arrived today), but it's going to take me at least a month to get this thing set up and start using it for real. And of course, I'm going to be extremely careful about backups (I've been using Norton Ghost).

This is my first foray into XP, and there are a lot of apps to install and test. I've resolved this time to support dual boot, or n-tuple boot, whatever that entails. Eventually, one of those partitions will house a copy of Linux, but I'll be at it for a good while with Windows 95A, 95B, 98, 2000, and XP (screw NT and ME). Maybe Linux will be ready for me by the time I'm ready for it.

Meanwhile, I sure find myself keeping busy standing still.

I'm really pleased, except for getting annoyed at the places in VFP that don't conform to my font appearance settings, and websites that use small font point sizes instead of % based sizes. Intellisense is horrid on the old box that's just not enough horsepower to run it. Intellisense is much better on a Ghz class machine.

>>I just got a new Dell Inspiron 8500, too. Twice a fast (2GHz) as my last machine of a year and a half ago. Twice as much memory (512MB). But only 20% more disk space (up from 50 to 60GB). Sounds like a lot of space, until I start splitting this thing up into as many versions of Windows as I can handle. It should be an interesting adventure...
