All that's necessary is for them to allow SQL traffic between the TS box and the SQL Server box (this could all be locked down pretty well). This might be the easiest way to go.

Your web service would expose methods your desktop app. could call - it's easy to use things like XMLTOCURSOR() and CURSORTOXML() to pass cursors between the client and web server. But, it would require a change in the way data was retrieved and saved on the client side. The other issue you have to deal with is reports. In a lot of web apps I'll either redo the report so it's a native HTML report, assuming that's possible, or just return the report as a PDF file. PDF's are normally an easier way to go with existing applications. If you want to go this route, I'd highly recommend looking at something like WebConnect. It includes a ton of functionality that makes doing this kind of stuff easier.
