The < PRE > and < /PRE > codes (without the spaces) enclose "pre-formatted" text. This is a standard HTML tag. It mainly does four things:
Use a fixed-width font.
Turn off word-wrap.
Respect spaces.
Specifically in the UT messages area, a white background and syntax highlighting is added.
OTOH, if you notice any special effect in a message, which you want to learn, you just need to click on "Reply" to see the "source code" (don't click the "Send" button, unless you actually wanted to send it).
