The first question is, how to select the data? For instance, the framework Visual Extend has a "Quick Report" feature, which does this, based on the main grid in the currently-selected form. You might also just show the user a list of tables.
This generic solution is quite complicated; for instance, you may want to let the user select the desired fields.
I believe that in the case of Visual Extend, the framework directly edits the report file (opened as a table), but this is fairly complicated, too.
