Well, others enjoy using MySQL but (until recently) it lacked transactions and stored procedures. Currently, I use ODBC as my way of creating connections (there are other ways). Normally, I just connect to a linux box running Postgres. Now it installs and runs on Win2K, XP as a service. It's slick. I haven't tested for performance but it seems fast. This is version 7.2 (7.3 is faster). Soon 7.4 will be out (it is suppose to have direct window support) and I'm sure it will bring many new features (although I think writting SP in python will most likely be dropped). I have only one client using the database daily (about 3Gb) and it has not been down for about 6-8 months (I stopped it to make a few hardware changes). Using VFP as the frontend is cool but boring (nothing has gone wrong).
Install using techdocs.postgresql.org - the instructions are good. After installing check out the doc's from the Postgres.org site. Ask me questions. Just do it in the next two days because I'm going on a vacation (returning 07/10). Have fun.
John

I am interested in learning C/S, and a freeware like this can help. Can you give me brief instructions to get started - do I have to install it and create ODBC connections, or what?

Or might it be simpler to get started with some other database server?
