Colin,
I'd first check if that's a security issue (happens with default pre installations of Office by brand name computers - default security doesn't let object manipulation).
Try this on machines that it fails :
oExcel = createobject('Excel.Application')
oExcel.Quit
If it's a security thing then would fail on createobject line. Go and set permissions from DCOM then.
