Another possibility: add users, which you would like to monitor and frequently contact to your Dashboard. From there if they are online you can send a private message and invite to talk.

BTW, I share my account (and computer) with my husband and he is more often online, than me. So, in several cases you're just calling me in vain... The best check would be to send a private UT message first.
