The processing time for updating the general field with a document that averages 30k seems to be about .9 seconds. Importing or as a link seems to only make a difference of about .01 second. Therefore, in the case of our application we have an average of about 40 1 page documents linked during print time. That takes a total of about 40 seconds to populate the general field for the 40 records. That's too slow.

Leeroy,
You're getting word docs into general and then into reports ? If so why not directly print from word with automation. Setting data in word is faster, it could print in background etc.
Another alternative might be saving word docs as RTF if you prefer to print via report.
