Thanks for the heads-up and for the ideas... I ended up just using SYS(2003) and looking for a certain string on the path, assuming the project would be built from home directory. It sounds like anything more advanced than that won't work in the compiter directive, but I can see why the compiler doesn't have its full faculties as it is compiling. Compile time vs. run time has always taken me a bit to get my head around...

And as it turns out, conditional compilation probably isn't going to solve my original problem anyway, which is one of code organization...
