I can tell you now, the music we hear in the UK nowadays is mainly from the US, in fact native-bl**k-americans are a big hit over here, the charts are swamped with them, the UK seems to have big respect for music from the US, rap music is as commonly played over here now as much as rock was in the 60's (although before my time, I can still imagine that). And as Nick said, UK music has taken a real downhill slide, cheesy boy/girl groups also swamp the charts.
So, maybe it is "more" universally known than you imagined :-)
