Thomas, don't get too down yet. Jazz seems to be making a little bit of a comeback. My radio is on JazzFm 91.1 in Toronto, and it never changes. There are actually some very good singers taking Frank's place. Unfortunately, being jazz, it's still kind of marginalised. Diana Krall for example was an absolutely knockout piano player (great left hand), and a very good singer. She gave jazz a lift, but... (there's always a 'but') she's now going the way of Nat King Cole, I'm afraid. Still, there are some very good ones out there.

As far as pop is concerned, it's in a very sorry state - dominated by proponents of what I like to think of as the 'baying at the moon school of singing' - Celine Dion, Whitney Houston etc.

>I guess some may think of me as a bit of a snob when it comes to music. I began classical piano at 6, classical guitar at 10 and flamenco guitar at 16. I play many instruments and still enjoy playing for flamenco dancers and singers from Spain.

>I cannot say I have enjoyed much in the way of rock other than Chuck Berry. My wife knows all the words to all the popular rock songs. Let me add that my wife is also trained in classical and flamenco music.

>Last week I saw a chart in the newspaper about CD sales in the United States. Rap (I call it “crap”) was about 50% of total sales, pop (rock – what ever happened to singers like Frank Sinatra? Oh they died!), and country (there are only two kinds of music – country and western!) made up the remainder of the sales pie chart. Classical and flamenco were not listed. So I am in a minority. Maybe that is why I like VFP? :)

>>I can tell you now, the music we hear in the UK nowadays is mainly from the US, in fact native-bl**k-americans are a big hit over here, the charts are swamped with them, the UK seems to have big respect for music from the US, rap music is as commonly played over here now as much as rock was in the 60's (although before my time, I can still imagine that). And as Nick said, UK music has taken a real downhill slide, cheesy boy/girl groups also swamp the charts.
>>
>>So, maybe it is "more" universally known than you imagined :-)

>>>WOW, just goes to show that there are still some things that are not universally known! :o) Makes me wonder what great music is available in the UK that is not in the US?

>>>>>>>I could be a member of that club! :o) Back in my college days I worked as a waitress nights at the only restaurant at the airport in Grand Junction, CO. It's since been remodeled and there no longer is a restaurant, only a snackbar. Back then all snowbird flights to Aspen and Vail used to go through GJ so I met quite a few famous people including Kurt Russell (after the child movies and just before the big flicks), Stevie Nicks, Cher and Chastity Bono, George Hamilton, and more. Hey, I even served Charles Bronson a cheeseburger one day. :o} Last year my aunt dated a member of the rock group Train too. Those people are everywhere! :o) I have a friend that I talk to everyday at lunch at the coffee shop here that is a SIFU and does specialized wilderness, self-defense, etc training. He has quite a few students that are famous and they contact him all the time. He went on tour with the Dave Mathews band for a month once for fun and also with a couple of other bands. Just
