If this is in a report, you could set the Print When expression to "NOT EMPTY(myField)".

Failing that, I can't think of anything (besides Jayesh's suggestion) short of creating a new class that does tricks with binding and unbinding the ControlSource in ProgramaticChange (update) and InteractiveChange.
