Yes, but digging is not straightforward for Word, I am learning < s >.
On the other hand, the error started generating reports to MS, so I let it do 5-10 of them.

I had tried re-boots several time, Word97, Word2000 and WordXP.

Strangely, after doing the sequence I described for 4 copy/pastes, the problem has
gone away and both documents that had problems have now been successfully copy/pasted
several times in the 'regular' manner.

Your initial message gave me the hope that I had run out of and some ideas to pursue.
