I think these are things you should change in the Control Panel, not in your application. Your application should respect the user's preferences.
Also, a square is a remnant from DOS - and in DOS, it is placed ON a character, not BETWEEN two characters. So just changing to a square would not be enough... Better get the users accustomed to the standard Windows interface.
