I strongly recommend not to do that. Tell me: did you ever saw a Windows application with a red square caret? I bet you didn't. Do you think you are the first programmer thinking on this? I bet you aren't.
For some reason, everyone gave up. The reason is "maintain compatibility with the other windows application. If you don't do so, you'll have a freaky, creepy app, colored red and green all over the place".
