Don't forget my caveat though - it's not a great book! But I do recommend it, again because most of the other books out there are even worse, and because it does help you get your hands dirty in the IDE (it really is a step-by-step guide). If you're not yet familiar with ADO.Net, it gives a very good overview of the object model and how to use it in WinForms and WebForms.
The examples really are step-by-step, and the author is very good about teaching the many ways to skin a cat. She shows both how to take advantage of the IDE to create ADO.Net objects, and also how to build them from scratch in the code. And there are a couple of typos (but really not too bad), which will encourage you to learn the debugger a bit.
I think you'll find the IDE quite intuitive and easy to use once you just start using it. In many ways, it's even easier to use than the VFP IDE. In fact, a few times, I felt sure I was doing stuff wrong because it just seemed to easy (wait till you set up a DataSet by just dragging a field from the Server Explorer!).
Good luck,
David
