This looks as if VFP is rounding (up) in once case, truncating in another.

Check the exact value of the variable, because it probably has more than 2 decimals. You can SET DECIMALS TO 10, for instance, or ? n_tot * 1000. Then, try to find out which commands you use to round up vs. down.
