Unfortunately, we have to remember Thread #781789, message #781789 after Will's discussion about running Fox on Linux. This is not a scenario MS wants to see.

Alan

>WINE ( "Wine Is Not an Emulator", a recursive acronym, like several other LINUX programs ) was demonstrated by Whil Hentzen ( chocolate lover and publisher of the most complete array of Foxpro books on the planet ) at LA Fox May 13, 2003. WINE permits Windows Applications to run under LINUX.
>
>A further demonstration of WINE / LINUX and VFP was made by Paul McNett at LULA ( Linux Users of Los Angeles ) July 15, 2003. During both presentations, the presenters pointed to the website:
>
> http://www.WINEhq.com
>
>In addtion, both presenters annouced that Visual Foxpro was the most requested Windows application for support using WINE / LINUX. The speakers mentioned that we ( that means you ) could express our desire for the WINE community ( WINE is open source and as such the development group is known as a community, much like the POTLATCH Indians who shared everything ) to make sure the Visual Foxpro ( Versions 5, 6, 7, and 8 ) will operate in the WINE / LINUX environment. There are Instructions on how to vote on the site, but I found them to be overly terse and assuming things not in evidence; therefore, I am writing this email, which may be read, copied, distributed, ignored or cast into bronze tablets, as long as the phrase "Foxpro is Great!" is included.

>Even the instructions on the WINE site, start by saying you must be logged into the Application database. Of course this implies that you are a subscriber to the group. To become a subscriber, you need to create an account. There are several ways to get to the "Create New Application DB Account" page, but the direct link is:

>Maybe there is some other way, but after I created my account, I still had to log in on a separate page. You may feel free to explore the site to find this page, but the direct link is:

>If you are viewing the Visual FoxPro page, and have properly logged into the WINE Applications database, you should see the voting panel in the left margin ( small screen resolutions may force you to scroll down to see the voting panel ):

>If you browse back to the Visual Foxpro Page, you should also see that the Voting Panel has changed to reflect the fact that you have voted for Application # 296 ( Visual Foxpro ):

>4) Stuff the Ballot Box ( optional )
>
>Note that there remain 2 more votes. You may navigate to any application in the WINE database and vote for that one too. ( Paul McNett has indicated that all 3 votes may be cast for the same application, personally, I would think that the WINE community might discount / discard multiple votes for the same application. ) Later correspondence with Paul indicated that the votes are being tallied, but are not the prime force behind WINE development.

>5) Rate application ( optional )

>In addition to voting for the application in the database, there is another page for each application ( and versions of the application ). Personally, since I don't have non-windows experience ( with versions 5, 6,7 or 8 ) other than Windows Terminal Server / CITRIX Metaframe, I have yet to rate the Visual Foxpro. To navigate to the the rating page for each application, click on the version in the box near the bottom of the Visual Foxpro page in the application database:

>In the left column, you should see a box for rating the application's compatibility -- with 2 columns of option ( radio ) buttons, one for "With Windows" and one for "Without Windows":

>Finally, hope this helps in the spread of Visual Foxpro.
