As my new partner (who's much better at marketing than me) Mr. Strahl informs me, lots of people don't want to spend the initial money to evaluate a product, so providing an evaluation copy is a good way to reach these developers. I see his point, especially in foreign countries where it can be a real pain to secure payment for a product (i.e. no credit cards).
