As Mark and Hilmar said, there are several existing solutions for this problem. One of them is gridsort (?) by Barbara Peisch, another is in Download section here - GridSorting sample by Vlad Grynchyshyn (with arrows). I am sure, Marcia Akins has one in her book.

I also have my own version, in which I borrowed some of Vlad's ideas. However, for simplicity I used colors for asc/desc order. If you would like my version, drop me a note by clicking on the envelope.
