now I got the point. If I create the same directory-structure on my C-drive, it works there - BUT - in the default installation of XP one subfolder in the temp-path is a hidden folder - if I set the same subfolder to 'Hidden' on my c-drive, it doesn't work ! This is really annoying, since if I imagine you deploying an application developed on your "c:\win_temp"-tempdir to a customer with a default installation - there could be some effects which will make you headache...

I want to thank you for your input - some testing I wouldn't have done without your replies...
