Tracy;
Is a competitive wage structure good? By that I mean the cheapest wage is best and must be found. A different labor force (union is out – scab is in, a different city, state or country). The reality is if costs are too high then something has to be done.
I like good European style bread! One slice if dropped on a kitchen table will wake up the family! This is unlike the breads we Americans are accustomed to such as Wonder bread. My mom says, “It’s a wonder you can eat it”!
I met a German bakery owner who had a contract with United Airlines (UA) for twenty years. He made German style biscuits for UA. Eat a biscuit and you needed nothing else for your meal. Lots of flavor too! He lost his contract by .01 cents per biscuit to a well-known American bread company. The new biscuits were so light they could almost float. Who wants quality when profit is at stake!
Big companies run the show and what seems like a slight difference of a fraction of a cent or even treating people like humans is not always in the business plan of an organization.
Companies rationalize, “We owe efficient management and a good return on investment to our investors. We must hold down labor costs to be competitive”!
All this being said while the CEO has a $120 million Golden Parachute.
