Matt
I worked for a long distance reseller where a quarter's worth of billing information was approaching 2 gigs (the index file was approaching 2 gigs, the data file was 1.3 gigs). That company will not consider C/S because of the speed. The Computer Service app would pull 2 years of billing information (usually around 100 records) from 5 tables at the time I worked there in less than 2 seconds. There was no need for security on the tables outside of the system. The file maintenance routines were automated and ran during non business hours. For their situation, foxpro tables were the right answer.
