As one in that bracket I am amazed at how the old principle has just been shoved aside.... that one was paid more the longer they were employed at a firm (white-collar at least) because they were more knowledgeable/EFFICIENT. For instance, they had some "institutional memory" that could prevent hapless 'adventures'. So they pay cheaper and get less efficiency and constant repeats of past mistakes, but it still LOOKS better on the bottom line.
