Hi Alex,
It seems each format has it's advantages and disadvantages. The problem with the BMP format is it's pretty big. If you have a lot of space on your server, and a very fast LAN, then this could be the best option.
JPG is compressed, but you pay for that with a loss of clarity. Also, there's a variety of formats of JPG, and they're not always compatible with your software, plus you can't always change the size of a JPG and have it look decent. You'd need to play around with the size and format to determine what works best in your particular case.
GIF is also compressed, but works best for graphics, not photos. I've found GIF photo files just don't look right.
I haven't played around with other formats, so I can't comment on those.
