Yes, I understand that that is the reason.

Differences between JPG and GIF include:

JPG supports millions of colors (24-bit color), GIF only 256.

GIF supports animations.

GIF supports only lossless compression. JPG supports both lossy compression and lossless compression, but the standard is lossy compression. This makes for the loss in quality in some cases.

GIF is proprietary. For this reason, some programs have been reluctant to support it.

A new standard that is coming forth is JPEG 2000. Looks quite interesting. For instance, when downloading information, even if you download only a small fraction of the image, you can still see the entire picture - in lower quality. This can eventually save the trouble of providing images in different resolutions.
