To open a file exclusively to change its structure no one else can have it open anywhere. In your example you can change logs1 as it is a local cursor so you can open it exclusively. You could create a index on your local result (logs1) would that help?

If you always need the extra field then could you add it to the base table as part of a maintenance update?
