I was unable to use Mabry grid and finally selected Exgrid ( www.exontrol.com ) which is quite similar but control creators provided specific propery DefaultItem allowing to use 0 instead of long item handle.

ogrid.items.DefaultItem = ItemHandle
ogrid.items.ITEMDATA(0) = rs.Bookmark

My understanding is that your example might work until none of the parameters exceeds 65000 array limit.
